Yesterday officially concluded the last day of summer, but you wouldn't know it with our 80 degree weather in Seattle.  While my garden produced quite a bit of food this year, the growing season for some vegetables can be sometimes year round.  This past weekend I pulled my lettuce that went to seed and a couple of dead tomato plants to make room for a few vegetable starts.  Kale, cauliflower ...

Great News For Seattle.   IKEA in Renton is now a drop off location for all block Styrofoam.  A special thanks to V&G Styro Recycle for helping remove Styrofoam from our landfills.  Pick ups can also be arranged for larger quantities.  Here's the deal; Styrofoam (block, chunks, bagged peanuts, etc) must be clean and free of debris such as cardboard, film, staples or nails are all ...

As I recently learned from my tour of the Waste Management Recycling Facility, they don't take the plastic caps that come affixed to our water, soda and milk containers.  The plastics used in these caps have a lower demand in the marketplace. Therefore, they don't get recycled, and most of the time they make their way to the landfill.  Aveda Corporation recognized this problem and recently ...

Nothing makes me feel more guilty than when I purchase a computer, or some other electronic device, and it comes packed in a styrofoam igloo!  It's harder than hell to recycle, it takes up my entire trash bin, and I know it's going to be around forever.   The good news is that some companies, like Dell Corporation,  are switching to more environmental alternatives like molded recycled fiber ...

In 2007, 1.4 billion pounds of PET (polyethylene) plastic were recycled curbside.  PET is the basis for a lot of product packaging including water/soda bottles, clam shell packaging, etc.  With the recent, yet unregulated, shift of products to be "more green", some plastics manufacturers have started putting additives into plastics to help them break down quicker (presuming the will end up  in ...

We all know our recycling goes in that Big Green Bin, but I wanted to find out where our recyclables ended up.  Today, I had the opportunity to tour Waste Management's sorting facility in Woodinville, Washington. I arrived at  the recycling facility 1pm sharp thinking I would be intermingling with a group of elementary school students.  To my amazement, I was the only one on the tour!  ...

Unsure what to do with that old box?  Well, you can always reuse it or recycle it but how about turning it into a laptop stand.  We came across this Do it Yourself tutorial of how to download a template and create your own laptop stand.  While it works well for laptops, we're curious how it would function holding one of our recycled cardboard binders . And finally, if you ...

I love it when restaurants and businesses push the envelope for getting their message across about recycling  and composting .  A friend sent this picture to me today while picking up a cup of coffee at Essential Bakery in Madison Park (Seattle). I'm the guy that picks through the trash at our office on a daily basis looking to see if I can find any recycling violations!  I'm quick ...

Next time your stopping by your local big box office supply store, take a good smell when you walk in the door. Sniff, sniff, sniff...Ahhhhhhh....That wonderful chemical smell is the off-gassing of PVC/Vinyl. Ok, maybe it doesn't smell "as bad" as it did a few years ago. Manufactures of three ring vinyl binders and other petroleum derived products have found alternative plastics that don't off-gas ...
