Certification & Materials
All of ReBinder's chipboard products are FSC™ certified (Forest Stewardship Council™)
What is FSC?
FSC is an international, independently audited certification and labeling system that allows buyers to choose paper and wood products that come from responsibly managed forests, and verified recycled sources. Under FSC certification, forests are certified against a set of strict environmental and social standards, and fiber from certified forests is tracked all the way to the consumer through the Chain of Custody certification system. The FSC “check-tree” logo is your guarantee that the products you buy are responsibly sourced. The intent of the FSC system is to shift the market to eliminate habitat destruction, water pollution, displacement of indigenous peoples and violence against people and wildlife that often accompanies logging.
All of ReBinder's chipboard products (ReBinder, ReSleeve, RePlay, ReTab, RePouch, ReWrite, and ReBound) are made from 100% Recycled fibers (85% Post Consumer Recycled / 15% Post Industrial Recycled) and are FSC Certified.
All of ReBinder's corrugated cardboard products are SFI® certified (Sustainable Forestry Initiative)
What is SFI?
The SFI label is a sign that you are buying wood and paper products from a responsible source, backed by rigorous, third-party certification and audit. ReBinder’s corrugated cardboard suppliers are all committed to SFI for the purpose of communicating fiber sourcing and certification that ensure accurate information is passed along with ReBinder corrugated cardboard products to customers. In order to maintain this certification, suppliers are also required to implement an ongoing control system to test, review, and report the integrity of the data.
Certification, the Environment and your Brand
Corporate social responsibility issues have become a core piece of corporate brands. Responsibly dealing with your company’s footprint will not only reduce risk, but can also complement your brand if you can walk the walk and know how to have a conversation about it. ReBinder's products that carry the FSC certification logo lets the world know that your company supports the highest social and environmental standards and products in the the market. The purchase of our products contribute to the conservation, responsible management, and community level benefits for well managed forests and verified recycled paper sources.
Our Printing
ReBinder offers custom screen printing on all of our products. The inks we use in all standard printing are water-based acrylics, non-VOC, and non-toxic. We get asked from time to time if our screen printing inks are soy based - they are not. Even soy-based inks have only a small percentage of soy in them (7-10%) and the rest is a petroleum-based inks that require chemicals to clean up. At this time there are no soy inks for screen-printing available.
Post Consumer Recycled / Post Industrial Recycled
What's the difference? Post Consumer Recycled means that a product has gone through it's life cycle and has made it back into the recycling stream. An example of this would be anything that you toss into your recycle bin at home (old magazines, used milk cartons, soda cans, etc). Post Industrial Recycled (also called Pre-Consumer Recycled) can be defined as the left over mill scrap or the manufacturing waste left over from making a product. An example of this could be a magazine publisher that has excess paper trim left over from printing a magazine. That material can be recycled but hasn't made it's way into a usable product but gets put back into the recycling system. While both are important, it's better that we support products that are made with a highest post consumer content than post industrial. Otherwise, what's the incentive to recycle? As a society, we create a lot of waste. We also have a lot of recycled product that needs to find a home other than a landfill.
ReBinder uses chipboard that is 100% Recycled with a minimum 85% post consumer recycled and 15% post industrial recycled. Ideally, we would love to be able to offer 100% post consumer. However, we have made the determination that the benefit from sourcing paper fiber with lower post consumer content that is closer to our conversion facilities out weighs the higher post consumer. As part of our business model, these types of manufacturing trade-offs are core to our thought process and mission. As the economics and environmental and social impact of each trade-off change, so do we.
